Foyer Makeover: Choosing the Perfect Light, Mirror, Sconces, and Bench

My bedroom foyer plan is really starting to come together, and it feels so satisfying to see the pieces fall into place. A few days ago, I shared that I had narrowed down my ceiling light options to five strong contenders. Well, yesterday I finally made my decision! I went with a light from Wayfair (affiliate link), and I couldn’t be happier with it.

The reason this particular light won me over is twofold. First, it’s the brightest of all the options, with four bulbs, and it’s dimmable — perfect for adjusting the mood depending on the time of day. Second, while I love gold accents, I knew that pairing one of the mostly-gold options with the gold-framed full-length mirror I plan to hang in the foyer would be overkill. The shape of this light also feels just right — stylish, distinctive, but not overpowering — and I think it will perfectly complement the bedroom foyer’s overall aesthetic.

Speaking of mirrors, I’ve found the one I’ve been dreaming of at Hobby Lobby. I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw it! It measures 60 inches high and 30 inches wide — just the right proportion for the space. The shape is beautiful, the scale is perfect, and the price is only $99! I didn’t buy it right away because my van was already full of molding, but I’ll be going back today to grab it. I’m so excited to see it in the foyer.

Now, onto sconces. I’d love to place them on either side of the mirror for a symmetrical, polished look. My first preference is to use hardwired sconces — nothing beats the convenience of lighting that’s always ready to go. Plus, I’m terrible about keeping rechargeable lights charged. Luckily, I still have the sconces from our previous bedroom, and their simple design with white shades would look gorgeous against the teal grasscloth wallpaper.

If I do decide to go wireless, rechargeable sconces are also an option. I found a beautiful pair on Amazon (affiliate link) for just $59.99! It’s hard to beat that price, and the style is clean and modern enough to work well in this space. I’m weighing my options carefully, though; convenience versus aesthetics is always a tricky balance.

Finally, the bench. I’ve been dreaming of having an upholstered bench in the foyer — a cozy spot where I can sit and put on shoes, essentially extending my closet space into the foyer. I didn’t want to crowd the actual closet with a bench and a full-length mirror, so placing them outside felt like the perfect solution. Serendipitously, I already had two benches in the breakfast room that I no longer plan to use, and one of them fits the foyer like it was made for it. I was so excited to discover that I wouldn’t have to build anything from scratch.

Of course, the color of the bench doesn’t work with the space, so reupholstering it is next on the to-do list. I also want the bench to have a delicate pleated skirt, but not one that touches the floor — something light and airy that still feels elegant. Even with the doors open, there’s still plenty of room to sit comfortably, with at least five feet between the corner of the bench and the opposite wall. It’s the perfect combination of form and function.

Finding the right fabric will be the tricky part. Most local fabric stores have disappeared, leaving only limited options at places like Hobby Lobby. I might have to turn to online shopping to find the perfect material, or perhaps design one myself and have it printed through Spoonflower. My vision is a fabric that incorporates all of my favorite colors — teal, light blue, pink, and orange — but without being too busy. That may be a tall order, but the right fabric will pull the whole foyer together beautifully.

Every little decision — from the ceiling light to the mirror, sconces, and bench — is bringing this foyer to life. I can already envision how it will all look when it’s finished, and I’m so excited for the moment when I can finally step back and take it all in. This space is no longer just a passageway; it’s becoming a beautiful, functional introduction to our bedroom suite.
